Moving day is finally here, and if you happen to be making that move in Houston during the heat of the summer, there are some practical things that you will want to keep in mind.
It’s true, the summers in Houston can be quite brutal, with temperatures frequently climbing into the triple digits. And, as those of us who live along the Gulf Coast know, the summer heat often extends straight into October or November.
So, here are some tips that will keep you calm, cool and hydrated throughout your summertime move.
Managing Expectations
Managing expectations can be essential to the success of your move. As we all know, regardless of the time of the year, moving is a very stressful event in a person’s life. So, when you add temperatures of 100+ degrees, a fair amount of discomfort and irritability can easily be added to the mix. This is why we recommend that you manage your expectations, as well as those of your family members, by being as prepared as possible when moving day finally arrives.
Remember, the best defense is always a good offense. Moving day is no exception! What that means is that you need to be well-prepared and extremely organized in advance of the big day. This can definitely help you to alleviate some unnecessary stress.
Stay Hydrated
We cannot over-emphasize the importance of staying hydrated throughout the summer, and especially on moving day. If you have children, hydration is especially important for your little ones. While sweet juices and sugary beverages might be their favorite drinks, nothing quite takes the place of good old H2O. Other beverages, such as those that replenish electrolytes (like Gatorade), are also popular choices, and good ones to reach for on moving day.
Stay Nourished
This one seems fairly obvious, but it is easy to get all caught up in the activities of the move and neglect your simple nutrition needs. So, in short, don’t forget to eat! It’s a good idea to keep some snacks handy for both you and your children throughout the day. You might even want to pack a cooler full of some of the family’s favorite snacks.
Besides, snacking can help to take the edge off if regular meals are disrupted as a result of the move. And, it’s just as easy to include healthy options as it is to offer junk food. So, try and keep some healthy snacks with you on moving day.
Pet Care on Moving Day
If you have your pets with you on moving day, keeping them cool and hydrated is equally important. Always make sure that they have plenty of water, and that their water bowls are easily accessible throughout the day. If your furry family members must be kept outside, it’s important that they have a spot with plenty of shade.
Do they have a favorite toy? It’s also a great idea to keep some of their favorite toys within easy reach, so that they have familiar things to help them feel more comfortable and at ease. Moving day can be a strange one for everyone, including your pets.
Organized packing means organized unpacking
If you were organized in the way that you packed up and labeled your belongings, then chances are you will be equally organized when you do your unpacking. At the same time, don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to get everything unpacked and put away immediately. Give yourself a chance to consider where you want everything to go, instead of hastily putting things away just to get it done.
Keep your must-have items within easy reach
It seems obvious, but you need to make sure that you keep your must-have items within easy reach. Sometimes in the frantic rush to get things packed, important items can get misplaced. So, we recommend packing a designated box or bag with all of your must-have items. These will be the items that you want to have easy access to immediately. This could include anything from a child’s favorite toy, to important documents and information pertaining to your move.
Expect the Unexpected
Finally, always expect the unexpected. Even the best laid plans and the most well-organized moves can experience issues. For that reason, you should always expect the unexpected when moving.
