At OleRRelo, we use our international moving experience to make your overseas transition as seamless as possible. From the customs paperwork to the logistics, we take the stress out of your big move so that you can focus on becoming acclimated to your new city. In an effort to smooth the process even more, we put together some tips for our Houston movers relocating to Madrid.
First things first, you’re likely going to have to apply for a foreign identification number or “NIE.” This number will serve as your ID and tax number as well as allow you to open up a bank account, apply for work, access healthcare, and more. You can find more information here. Don’t worry, this application process is relatively straight forward.
Another thing many immigrants to Spain wonder about is the healthcare system. Luckily, Spain’s healthcare is ranked among the highest in the world. And better yet, it’s funded through tax revenue so all residents of the country have access. There is also the option of private insurance which gives the insured the opportunity to essentially ‘skip the lines’ of the overcrowded waiting rooms of non-emergency procedures
Next is public transportation. Like most European cities, Madrid has a great, reliable transportation service. Although it’s one of the best pedestrian cities on the continent, it won’t hurt to get yourself an Abono card. This card will allow you to access the metro with unlimited uses for only about 50-60 euros per month.
Prepare yourself for the weather. Spain has the reputation of a summer-year-round beach-goer’s paradise. But for those looking for a replica of the Houston heat, you’ll need to adjust those expectations because you’re surely going to be disappointed. There’s a saying about Madrid that goes ocho meses de invierno, cuatro meses de infierno. Which means “eight months of winter, four months of hell” (it sounds more clever in spanish). Many tourists and expats run into a long and unexpected winter season so it’s a good idea to bring those mittens and overcoats along.
Madrid is a really exciting place to live. Whether you’re moving for work, school, a significant other, or just for the experience, we at OleRRelo can help get you and your belongings there and remove the stress from your transition.
